SPOSCI
services
SPOSCI is a non-profit community managed childcare service for primary
school children. SPOSCI has operated form the South Perth Primary school
since 1982. We offer Before School care, After School Care and Vacation
care. We are licensed by the Department for Community Development and
participate in quality assurance through the National Childcare Accreditation
Council. We run a programme that offers children a range of activities
in a safe, caring, inclusive environment.
Frequently asked questions
1. Who can use the service?
The service caters for all families who require childcare, however we
must adhere to the commonwealth priority of access guidelines which dictate
the order by which we can accept enrolments;
1st Children at risk
2nd Children whose parents/guardians are working, studying, training or
disabled
3rd All other children
2. Is there a waiting list?
We currently have a waiting list for after school care. We have vacancies
in our before school programme.
Enrolments for vacation care are taken for each programme separately,
generally 3 months in advance, all vacation care places fill up quickly
and a waiting list applies. Positions in the vacation programme are allocated
in the order that applications are received.
3. How do I enrol?
Complete an enrolment form and return it. You will be placed on the waiting
list and advised as soon as a place becomes available. If you are applying
for the following year you will be advised in December as to whether you
have a place.
4. Can I visit the service to meet the staff and look around?
Before enrolling we recommend that you make a time with the staff for
you and your child to visit the service so you can tour al the areas used
by the children and meet the staff.
5. Can I get fee assistance?
We are a registered carer with the Commonwealth so families who qualify
can access the Childcare Benefit and JET fee assistance programmes. Please
telephone Centrelink or the Family assistance office on 13 61 50. In order
to link your child with our service you will need to quote our customer
reference numbers which are; 555 009 607X and 555 010 547J.
6. Do you cater for children with additional needs?
Yes. Staff are trained to support children with additional needs. SPOSCI
has access to commonwealth SNSS funding to help the inclusion of children
with additional needs into the programme. We also have access to a number
of training and support agencies who can work with the staff and families
to help support your child’s inclusion in the programme.
Staff are trained in caring for the needs of children with health support
plans, special dietary requirements and behavioural support needs.
7. I am concerned that my child may not be ready to attend SPOSCI.
Families are sometimes concerned that their child is not old enough for
an environment such as SPOSCI. They are concerned that it is too busy,
near roads, has many older children or that their child may become too
tired.
Each year families experience the same anxiety. We suggest that you attend
the service with your child and judge for yourself if you think they are
ready and will be happy at SPOSCI. We can reassure you that your child
will be safe and well cared for but the best way is to come and see for
yourself. If we find that your child is not quite ready we can hold your
child’s place until you feel they are ready.
8. Will SPOSCI be open for the pre-primary half days at the beginning
of the year?
SPOSCI opens for all regular week days when the school is closed. For
Pre-primary half days we will pick the children up from school at lunch
time. We ask you to send your child with a packed lunch on these days.
9. Will a staff member pick my child up from their classroom?
Yes. If your child is booked into before school care a staff member will
walk them to their classroom for the beginning of the school day. If you
child is booked into after school care we pick up pre-primary and grade
one children from their classrooms. South Perth children walk themselves
to the centre and St Columba's children meet sposci staff outside the
grade 2 classroom before being escorted to the centre.
10. Who can I speak to get more information?
Angela Needham or Amy Jones will be able to assist you with any enquiries.
We have a parent handbook and policy book to give you further information.
